ゆうぜんしょくにん
Industry & Occupation
Classification
Summary
Traditional crafts artisan who applies Japanese patterns and designs to fabric using techniques such as dyeing and resist paste.
Description
Yuzen artisans apply traditional yuzen dyeing to fabrics such as kimonos and obis. First, they create an underdrawing of the design and apply resist paste to prevent dye penetration. After hand-painted coloring or stencil coloring, the fabric is steamed to set it and washed with water to remove excess paste and dye. A high sense of color and brush skills are required, and after completion, it undergoes inspection to become a finished product. A long apprenticeship period and attention to detail are essential.
Future Outlook
While a shortage of successors is an issue, stable demand is expected due to interest in traditional techniques and inbound tourism needs. Opportunities are also anticipated through fusion with new designs and collaborations.
