Classification
Summary
A job that uses cutting machines such as circular saws and band saws to cut logs and lumber to specified dimensions and prepare materials for the next process.
Description
Woodworking cutters operate cutting machines such as circular saws, band saws, and table saws at sawmills or wood product factories to cut logs and wood boards to specified dimensions. Before work, they measure the dimensions of the lumber, mark it, and set appropriate blades and rotation speeds. After cutting, they inspect the finished dimensions and cross-section quality, and remove defective products. During work, they inspect and maintain safety devices and guards, and perform replacement and adjustment of machine blades. Since it involves handling heavy objects, it may also include transportation work using cranes or forklifts.
Future Outlook
Demand for wood products such as building materials and packaging materials remains steady, with a certain number of job openings. With advances in automation and labor-saving, there is a trend toward requiring maintenance skills in addition to machine operation.
