Description
Velvet weavers use textile looms (such as jacquard looms or pile looms) to produce velvet, a fabric with raised pile (nap) on the surface. The work involves warping and sizing from raw fabric rolls, weft arranging, and setting the loom with appropriate tension and beating-up density. During production, they adjust nap height and density, inspect for weaving defects or irregularities, and perform fine adjustments or maintenance on the machine as needed. In the finishing process, they shape the nap and inspect the fabric. Knowledge of fiber product quality control and safety hygiene is also required.
Future Outlook
Although the number of practitioners is declining due to the overseas relocation trend of the domestic textile industry, there remains demand for high-value-added products and specialty weaving techniques domestically, so skills inheritance and the introduction of automation technology are expected to progress.
