Classification
Summary
Artisan who applies multiple layers of natural lacquer to the surfaces of lacquerware, wooden products, metals, ceramics, etc., repeatedly drying and polishing to impart beautiful luster and durability.
Description
Lacquer coating workers prepare the surface of wood, ceramics, or metal with abrasives, apply cloth backing and sealant, then layer on natural lacquer. After application, it hardens in a humidity-controlled drying room, and polishing is done intermittently over dozens of processes. They may also use decorative techniques such as maki-e or shippaku. They manage materials and tools, perform quality checks, consult with clients, and ensure the final finish.
Future Outlook
While the decrease in traditional craft practitioners is a challenge, demand for high-end lacquerware and tourist souvenirs remains strong, promising stable work both domestically and internationally. Technology inheritance and new market development are key to the future.
