Industry & Occupation
Classification
Summary
A technical job that performs non-destructive testing of internal defects in metal products and components using ultrasound for quality control.
Description
Ultrasonic flaw inspectors transmit ultrasound into metal products or structural components and detect and evaluate internal defects such as cracks, bubbles, and inclusions based on the characteristics of the reflected waves. They calibrate the equipment before inspection, select probes with appropriate frequencies, apply couplant to the inspection surface, and conduct measurements. They analyze the obtained waveform data, record the location and size of defects, compile inspection results into reports, and share quality improvement measures with relevant departments. Compliance with JIS and ISO standards, as well as regular equipment inspections and maintenance, are required.
Future Outlook
Demand is expected to remain stable due to aging infrastructure. As product quality assurance becomes more advanced and automation and AI analysis technologies are introduced, the skills required of technicians are expected to diversify.
