Industry & Occupation
Classification
Summary
A specialist occupation that manufactures materials for woven fabrics and clothing by permeating and fixing dyes into threads to apply color.
Description
Thread dyers select and mix appropriate dyes for undyed threads such as cotton yarn, silk yarn, and chemical fibers, and dye them in dyeing vats while managing temperature and pH. In addition to managing the temperature and time of the dye bath, they handle the entire process including selection of dyeing methods (such as dip dyeing and continuous dyeing), color fixing and washing processes, and drying. Quality inspections to prevent uneven coloring or color fading, as well as safety management of the dyes used, are also important. They often operate large industrial machines, but there is also small-lot production by hand.
Future Outlook
Due to the overseas transfer of production bases and the advancement of automation, the demand for craftsmanship is on a decreasing trend, but expertise in high-value-added materials and traditional crafts is expected to be maintained.
