Industry & Occupation
Classification
- Major : Research and Technical Occupations
- Middle : Development Engineers
- Minor : Chemical Product Development Engineers
Summary
A research and technical position handling raw material selection for synthetic rubber, polymerization reactions, formulation design, evaluation and analysis, and optimization of manufacturing processes. Responsible for improving performance of high-function rubber products and developing new materials.
Description
Synthetic Rubber Development Engineers handle improving performance and developing new rubber products used in tires, industrial components, seal materials, etc., through selection of industrial rubber raw materials, examination of polymerization reaction conditions, polymer formulation design, physical property evaluation, and more. They establish experimental plans considering molecular structure design, catalyst selection, crosslinking technology, effects of additives, etc., and perform tasks from prototyping, analysis and evaluation, to scale-up in pilot plants. Collaboration with manufacturing departments, quality control departments, customers, and joint research with external research institutions is also important. Compliance with safety and environmental regulations and cost management are required.
Future Outlook
With the electrification of the automotive industry, increasing demand for high-performance tires, and advances in bio-based materials and recycling technologies, demand for environmentally responsive synthetic rubber development is expected to expand.
