Sumo stablemasters acquire elder stock from the Japan Sumo Association after retirement and open and operate their own sumo stable. They also handle attendance at association general meetings, accompanying on provincial tours, sponsor negotiations, and other external matters, performing a wide range of duties as the person responsible for stable operations.
Future Outlook
Due to declining birthrates and reduction in elder stocks, the number of stables is tending to decrease, but demand as traditional culture is maintained. Shortage of successors is a challenge.
