Industry & Occupation
Classification
Summary
Specialized technician who generates an arc under powdered flux and joins thick plate structural materials and others with high quality using automatic or semi-automatic equipment.
Description
Submerged arc welders are specialists who generate an arc under powdered flux cover and join metal parts by automatically or semi-automatically supplying wire. They adjust optimal welding parameters such as the flux and wire used, current and voltage settings, feed speed, and welding speed, and inspect weld bead quality (appearance and internal defects). Mainly targeting thick plates, they are active at manufacturing sites for large structures such as shipbuilding, bridges, pressure vessels, and plant piping. They also handle machine maintenance and inspection, flux recovery and regeneration processing, safety management, reading welding drawings, and coordinating teamwork.
Future Outlook
Stable demand is anticipated from infrastructure renewal, shipbuilding, and plant construction, but as welding robots are introduced, demand for skilled workers with machine maintenance and programming skills will remain high.
