Summary

Artisans and technicians who grind and shape the surface of lithographic stones used for lithographic printing to produce printing plates that enable image drawing and transfer.

Description

Lithographic stone workers are specialized technicians who mainly use limestone and other stones to manufacture printing plates for lithographs (lithographic printing). First, they remove irregularities from the lithographic stone using a coarse grinding machine, then smooth it with fine abrasives, and finally finish with polishing cloth, etc., to create a uniform flat surface. When creating the drawing surface, they use etching solution (acid solution) to control the hydrophilic and hydrophobic properties of the image areas and non-image areas. The work involves using high-precision calipers, profile scopes, and other measuring instruments to strictly manage the flatness and thickness of the plate surface. Safety measures are required for handling dust and chemicals, and physical strength and skill are needed to handle heavy lithographic stones.

Future Outlook

Due to the spread of digital printing technology, demand for lithographic printing is on a declining trend, but niche demand remains in art printing and special printing fields that seek traditional techniques.
