Classification

Summary

A job that involves pouring clay slip into plaster molds, forming, drying, and removing the molded items to produce pre-fired formed products.

Description

Slip casting workers specialize in the slip casting process, which is the initial stage of ceramics manufacturing. First, they evenly stir the clay slip made by mixing clay soil with water and pour it into molds made of plaster (plaster molds). Once the mold absorbs an appropriate amount of moisture, a thin clay layer forms on the inside, and excess slip is drained to adjust the thickness of the formed product. After sufficient drying, the formed product is carefully removed from the mold, and inspected for cracks or distortions. They manage drying conditions after forming to prepare the product in a suitable state for loading into kilns and firing. Work involves attention to temperature and humidity control, plaster mold maintenance, and safety and hygiene.

Future Outlook

Due to declining birthrates, aging population, and shifts to overseas production, the ceramics industry is shrinking, but demand for domestic traditional crafts and high-quality ceramics is expected to continue. Adaptability to technological innovations such as automation and digital controls will be required.
