Classification

Summary

A technical occupation that partially burns pine wood to produce pine soot (soot), pulverizes and classifies it, and manufactures it as raw material for ink and pigments.

Description

Pine soot manufacturing workers collect pine soot (soot) generated by incomplete combustion of pine wood in a carbonization furnace, and manufacture powdery pigments of uniform particle size through processes such as washing, drying, crushing, and classification. They select the pine materials used, manage carbonization temperature and combustion time, operate crushing and classification machines, perform quality inspections (particle size, color tone, moisture content, etc.), and adjust to ensure the final product meets the quality standards required for ink and pigments used in calligraphy and painting. Since work is performed in high-temperature environments, safety and health management and dust control measures are important. While traditional manufacturing methods are valued, there is also a need to comply with environmental regulations and introduce automation technologies for efficiency.

Future Outlook

With declining demand for traditional crafts, the number of workers is decreasing, but high-quality pine soot has steady demand as a pigment for calligraphy and Japanese painting. In the future, automation of manufacturing processes and technology development to comply with environmental regulations will be key challenges.
