Shipbuilding ironworkers fabricate steel structures for hulls, decks, and cabins at shipyards. Based on blueprint reading, they operate plasma cutters, press brakes, arc welding and gas welding machines to ensure dimensional accuracy and welding quality. They also handle quality inspections and safety management, with work mainly consisting of team-based collaboration with other professions such as painters, machinists, and electricians.

Future Outlook

It depends on ship demand and shipyard operations, but demand for skilled technicians continues in the construction of large and special ships. On the other hand, the adoption of automation and robot welding is reducing man-hours.
