Classification

Summary

Specialized profession that removes old paint films and rust adhering to the ship's hull bottom and applies anti-corrosion paint and anti-fouling coatings (anti-fouling agents) to protect the hull.

Description

Ship hull painters are specialists who, in dry docks or while ships are moored in ports, remove old paint films and rust from the hull bottom using sandblasting or high-pressure water cleaning, and apply anti-corrosion and anti-fouling coatings. They skillfully use airless spray guns, rollers, and brush painting, perform paint dilution and color matching, and conduct painting operations using scaffolding and aerial work platforms. They are also required to comply with environmental regulations and safety management, such as preventing paint splatter, measuring paint film thickness, and handling waste. High-quality work is required from surface preparation to final finishing to protect the hull bottom, which is exposed to harsh marine environments, over long periods. In some cases, divers may perform painting underwater.

Future Outlook

Influenced by shipbuilding and maritime transport demand, but demand for anti-fouling coatings remains stable due to maintenance of aging ships and strengthening environmental regulations. While labor shortages are an issue, automation and robotic painting technologies are expected to advance.
