Industry & Occupation
Classification
Summary
A profession that manufactures and processes shibu paper, which has waterproof and durable properties, using kakishibu.
Description
Shibu paper manufacturing workers apply and impregnate base paper uniformly with kakishibu (persimmon tannin liquid) to produce shibu paper with waterproof and durable properties. They dilute the kakishibu liquid, adjusted through steaming, boiling, and filtration to the specified concentration, apply it to base paper using coating machines or by hand, and finish through drying processes. They also perform quality inspections, measurements of dimensions and weight, machine operation and maintenance, process management, and compliance with safety and health standards. The work takes place in environments where traditional techniques coexist with modern mechanization.
Future Outlook
Traditional shibu paper has limited demand, but there is stable need for waterproof paper and craft applications. On the other hand, the number of workers is decreasing due to advances in mechanization and labor reduction.
