Classification

Summary

A machining occupation that uses a shaper (shaving machine) to cut flat surfaces, keyways, and the like on metal parts to achieve dimensional accuracy and surface finish.

Description

Shaper operators operate shaper machines (shaving machines) to perform cutting machining on flat surfaces, grooves, keyways, and the like of metal workpieces. Depending on the parts to be machined, they select and install cutting tools and machining conditions, adjust stroke and feed speed to achieve high dimensional accuracy and surface quality. After work, they measure dimensions with calipers or micrometers and perform quality inspections. They also handle grinding and replacement of cutting tools, as well as machine maintenance and cleaning, to maintain safe and stable production.

Future Outlook

While automation and NC-ization are progressing, demand for manual shapers remains in small-lot and high-precision machining. Decreasing skilled workers is a challenge, requiring successor training and maintenance of advanced skills.
