Classification

Summary

A job that uses a shaper machine (manual metalworking machine) to cut and process the surfaces and grooves of workpieces.

Description

Shaper workers operate manual cutting machine tools called shaper machines to cut and process flat surfaces, steps, and grooves on metal workpieces. Workers select and attach tools (cutters) based on drawings, set cutting conditions (depth of cut, feed rate, stroke length), reciprocate the tool with lever operation to shave the material, and periodically measure dimensions to finish to the required shape and tolerance. Tool tip grinding, tool wear management, machine cleaning and maintenance are also included in the duties to ensure accuracy and safety.

Future Outlook

Although manual shaper workers are on a decreasing trend due to the普及 of NC machine tools, there is still demand for prototype processing and special shape processing. Skill succession is becoming an issue.
