Description
The Fan Rib Craftsman (Bamboo Made) is a traditional technician who manufactures bamboo fan ribs, the skeletal frame part of fans, in an integrated manner. First, high-quality bamboo is selected, dried, and pre-processed, then split and shaped using hand tools. Next, the main ribs and sub-ribs of the fan ribs are bent into predetermined shapes, assembled with adhesives or metal fittings, and the surface is polished to a smooth finish. The completed fan ribs are handed over to the fan face craftsman, who pastes washi paper or silk with pigments applied to complete the fan. This occupation requires advanced manual labor, aesthetic sense, and attention to detail.
Future Outlook
Although successor shortage is a challenge, interest in Japanese culture and handmade products, as well as demand in overseas markets, is increasing, and the value of artisans' skills is expected to be maintained.
