Self-Defense Force medical officers are graduates of the National Defense Medical College or civilian physicians who are recruited and assigned to Self-Defense Force hospitals or various units. They are responsible for medical treatment and health management of Self-Defense Force members and their families, engaging in a wide range of medical duties including internal medicine, surgery, emergency care, and preventive medicine. During disaster dispatches or international peace cooperation activities (PKO), they perform on-site triage, treatment, and sanitation guidance, contributing to maintaining the unit's combat effectiveness through infection control and sanitation management within the unit, as well as planning and conducting medical training. As commissioned officers with ranks, they lead medical teams and units and are involved in building sustainable medical provision systems.
