Summary

Artisan who handcrafts the sangen (Chinese sangen or similar Japanese instruments) from material selection through woodworking processing, lacquer painting, to string attachment, all done manually.

Description

The sangen maker carves the body and neck of the sangen from wood, applies lacquer or paint, then installs the strings, tunes, and adjusts the pitch. To draw out high-quality tones, material selection, meticulous woodworking, lacquer painting for moisture protection and decoration, and precise stringing techniques are required. While inheriting traditional techniques, they also handle custom-made designs and sizes according to the client's requests. Individual production in workshops is the mainstay, and they often receive orders from musicians and cultural facilities both domestically and internationally.

Future Outlook

Although demand as a traditional craft is limited, there are order opportunities in niche markets due to cultural revival and growing overseas interest. Meanwhile, the aging of practitioners is advancing, making successor training a challenge.
