Classification

Summary

An occupation that manufactures recycled fibers (shoddy wool) using discarded clothing and fiber scraps as raw materials.

Description

Rag Workers sort and wash discarded cloth and fiber scraps (rags), then crush and defibrillate them, using carding machines and such to loosen the fibers and produce recycled wool (shoddy). The processes include removing foreign matter from the raw material rags, humidity adjustment, operation and adjustment of pulping machines and carding machines, product quality inspection, and machine inspection and maintenance. Machine operation skills and on-site adjustment abilities are required to stably supply large quantities of fibers while considering quality control and safety and health.

Future Outlook

Although workload is decreasing due to advances in automation and efficiency, demand for personnel with specialized skills is expected to remain stable due to expanding demand for recycled fibers and sustainability orientation.
