Classification

Summary

Road construction design engineers handle tasks from the planning and design stages of roads to detailed design, including longitudinal and cross-sectional design, pavement and drainage structure design, cost estimation, environmental considerations, and a wide range of other duties as technical professionals.

Description

Road construction design engineers are responsible for tasks from the planning and design stages of roads to detailed design. Based on geological surveys and traffic volume surveys, they perform longitudinal and cross-sectional design, subgrade and roadbase structure design, pavement thickness design, drainage structure design, slope protection design, and more. They create design drawings using CAD and CIM tools, and prepare rough and detailed cost estimates. Important duties also include environmental impact and landscape considerations, coordination with relevant administrative agencies and local residents, and collaboration with construction management departments. Knowledge of civil engineering, traffic engineering, environmental engineering, and CAD operation skills are required.

Future Outlook

Stable demand is expected due to the need for repair and renewal of road networks due to aging population and declining birthrate, as well as increasing needs for disaster countermeasures and improved durability. Adoption of digital technologies such as CIM/BIM and environmentally considerate design will become even more important in the future.
