Summary

Precious Metal Inlay Artisans are traditional craft technicians who use precious metals such as gold and silver to apply intricate decorations using the inlay technique to the surfaces of sword fittings, tea utensils, personal adornments, and the like.

Description

Precious Metal Inlay Artisans are craftsmen who decorate the surfaces of sword fittings, tea utensils, ornaments, and similar items by engraving or grooving base metals such as gold, silver, and copper, then inlaying metal wires or plates, and sometimes other materials, using the inlay technique. The work processes include base preparation, pattern creation, processing with chasing tools, inlaying different materials, polishing and finishing, requiring minute work with high precision and uniform surfacing. Traditional techniques are passed down through master-apprentice relationships in workshops, while in recent years, adhesives, modern polishing techniques, and microscope-assisted work are also incorporated. There are no national qualifications; after an apprenticeship period, they acquire proficient skills and work in individual workshops or traditional craft associations.

Future Outlook

With the expansion of the high-end craft market and tourism/experience demand, a certain level of demand is expected to be maintained alongside the inheritance of traditional techniques. However, the shortage of successors is a challenge.
