Industry & Occupation
Classification
Summary
This occupation involves operating and monitoring equipment that heats and distills crude oil to separate and recover products such as gasoline and diesel fuel.
Description
Petroleum separation equipment operators are responsible for operating and monitoring distillation towers and separation equipment used to refine gasoline, diesel fuel, naphtha, and other products from crude oil. They use DCS or SCADA to monitor instrument values such as temperature and pressure, and adjust the output of valves and reboilers. They regularly perform sampling and optimize operating conditions based on quality analysis results. In the event of abnormalities, they execute emergency shutdowns, investigate causes, and comply with safety and environmental standards. They collaborate with the equipment maintenance department to oversee regular inspections and repair work. Under a 24-hour shift system, they support stable product supply.
Future Outlook
While stable supply of petroleum refining is in demand, the number of practitioners is expected to remain flat to slightly decrease in the long term due to progress in decarbonization and the shift to alternative energies. Acquiring automation and optimization technologies for manufacturing processes is key to improving market value.
