Summary

Obi fabric weavers are a profession that manufactures fabrics used for kimono obi sashes using looms.

Description

Obi fabric weavers use traditional or industrial looms to produce fabrics suitable for obi sashes (such as brocade, satin weave, tied weave, etc.). First, they perform warping (aligning the warp yarns), tension them on the loom, and set the pattern and weave structure. While weaving, they adjust thread tension and weft insertion width, and handle yarn breaks or machine malfunctions. The finished fabric roll undergoes quality inspection and is handed over to the finishing process. This work spans from traditional craft sites to modern factory production, requiring an understanding of colors and materials as well as machine operation skills.

Future Outlook

Due to declining birthrates, aging population, and decreasing demand for Japanese clothing, domestic production volume is on a shrinking trend, but demand as high-value-added traditional and craft products remains stable. Efforts are needed for training successors and developing overseas markets.
