Seedling Fabric Weaver
Industry & Occupation
Classification
Summary
A profession that uses raw yarn to produce fabric through hand weaving or machine weaving.
Description
Seedling fabric weavers are technicians who mount raw yarn on looms, organize warp and weft threads, and manufacture fabric. Before weaving, they perform preliminary processes such as warp preparation, heddle threading (sōkō), and treadle (tako) adjustment, and set the loom's tension and patterns. During production, they inspect the woven fabric for defects and perform yarn changes and loom maintenance as appropriate. Skills are required to produce various textiles suited to their uses, from mass production to high value-added products.
Future Outlook
While domestic apparel manufacturing is shifting overseas, automation through technological innovation and increased demand for special fibers are expected, and the demand for artisans with specialized skills will likely be maintained.
