Classification

Summary

Specialized occupation that assembles parts of general-purpose and production milling machines, adjusts and verifies positional accuracy and operation.

Description

Milling machine assemblers assemble components of milling machines consisting of castings and machined parts, and measure and adjust the positional accuracy of guide rails, beds, spindles, etc. They use precision measuring instruments such as torque wrenches, micrometers, and calipers to assemble within tolerances specified in the drawings. After completion, they conduct test runs to verify operational smoothness and cutting accuracy, readjusting as necessary to deliver high-quality machines to customers. Coordination on production lines and with the equipment maintenance department is also an important responsibility.

Future Outlook

While simple tasks are tending toward robotization due to advances in automation and labor reduction in manufacturing, assembly and adjustment of high-precision machines place emphasis on human skills, so demand for skilled workers is expected to persist.
