Classification

Summary

A profession that inspects defects in metal processed parts and weld joints using various non-destructive tests, dimensional and visual inspections to ensure quality.

Description

Metal processing and welding inspectors detect internal and surface defects in metal parts and weld joints to ensure product quality. They employ non-destructive testing techniques such as ultrasonic testing, magnetic particle inspection, penetrant testing, and X-ray inspection; develop inspection plans based on drawings and quality standards; and conduct dimensional inspections using calipers and micrometers. Judgment results for defective areas are compiled into inspection reports, and they collaborate with manufacturing and quality assurance departments to direct rework or improvements. Work is performed on factory production lines or in inspection areas, including indoor/outdoor environments or high-temperature, high-humidity conditions. Knowledge of quality control and JIS standards is required, and in recent years, understanding of automated inspection equipment and AI-based inspection methods has become essential.

Future Outlook

Demand remains stable due to strengthened quality control in manufacturing and the increasing number of ISO-certified companies. Amid the adoption of automated inspection equipment and AI inspection technologies, the value of personnel with advanced non-destructive testing skills is rising.
