Industry & Occupation

Engineering & Manufacturing

Classification

Summary

This occupation involves melting metal and pouring it into molds to manufacture cast products of specified shapes.

Description

Metal casters melt metals such as iron and aluminum in melting furnaces and pour them into sand molds or metal molds to produce castings. They are responsible for mold making (creating molds), pouring (pouring molten metal into molds), removing molds after cooling, cutting burrs and gates, finishing by grinding and polishing, defect inspection, and dimensional measurement. They also manage melting temperatures and safety and health. They may operate automated equipment, perform quality control, and conduct minor repairs and maintenance.

Future Outlook

Demand is stable with the recovery of manufacturing industries such as automobiles and machinery parts, but the decline in skilled workers due to labor-saving and automation advancements is a challenge. Introduction of new technologies such as 3D printer mold making is expected.
