Classification

Summary

Specialist who inspects, maintains, and repairs main and auxiliary engines installed on ships to maintain engine performance and support safe navigation.

Description

Marine engine repair technicians inspect, maintain, and repair main engines (diesel engines or turbines) and auxiliary engines (generators, pumps, boilers, etc.) installed on merchant ships, fishing vessels, cruise ships, and other vessels. They diagnose engine abnormalities during navigation or when docked, and perform parts replacement and repair work. They interpret engineering drawings and manuals, and proceed with work while complying with safety standards and environmental regulations. The work involves heavy labor in narrow engine rooms, long hours, and collaboration with captains, chief engineers, and other crew members for troubleshooting and periodic inspections. With technological advancements, operation of electronic control devices and remote monitoring systems is also required.

Future Outlook

Demand for preventive maintenance and emission regulation compliance technologies is increasing due to the extended lifespan of ships and stricter environmental regulations. Stable job openings are expected due to the shortage of skilled technicians, and adaptability to new technologies such as electric propulsion and hybrid engines will be highly valued.
