Industry & Occupation

Engineering & Manufacturing

Classification

Summary

Technical position involving the design and development of engine systems such as engines, turbines, and boilers installed on ships.

Description

Marine engine design engineers perform structural and performance design of engine equipment that serves as propulsion and power generation systems for ships. They study specifications based on customer requirements and navigation conditions, and use CAD for 3D modeling and CAE analysis (CFD/FEM) to evaluate thermal fluid characteristics and strength. They create drawings, select materials, conduct tests and evaluations on prototypes, perform quality inspections, coordinate with manufacturing departments, and ensure compliance with regulations and standards (IMO regulations, classification society standards). They are also required to manage schedules and costs, perform project management, and handle technical English reading and communication.

Future Outlook

Due to strengthening environmental regulations in the shipping industry and the need for fuel efficiency improvements, demand for marine engine design engineers is expected to remain stable. The market value of engineers who can respond to decarbonization and electrification technologies will increase further.
