Industry & Occupation

Engineering & Manufacturing

Classification

Summary

A technical role responsible for improving railway locomotive performance, pursuing safety and environmental compatibility, from planning to design, prototyping, evaluation, and mass production deployment.

Description

Railway locomotive development engineers handle a wide range of development processes for locomotives used in freight and passenger transport—from planning and conceptualization to detailed design, CAE analysis, evaluation tests of prototype vehicles, and mass production implementation—with the goals of enhancing performance, complying with environmental regulations, and ensuring safety. In mechanical design, they perform strength and vibration analysis based on strength of materials and power transmission systems. In electrical design, they are responsible for designing control systems and power control devices. They also verify compliance with railway technical standards and safety regulations, conduct field tests on test tracks, and coordinate and collaborate with manufacturing departments, maintenance departments, and regulatory authorities. Project management in multifunctional teams is required, and they are involved in developing next-generation vehicles using the latest environmental and IT technologies.

Future Outlook

With the advancement of decarbonization and autonomous driving technologies, demand is increasing for new electric locomotives, battery/hydrogen-powered vehicles, and maintenance technologies utilizing digital twins. While demand for conventional diesel locomotive development is on a declining trend, the development of environmental regulation compliance technologies remains important.
