Summary

A manufacturing technician who rough-processes glass or resin lens blanks using grinding machines, etc., to finish them to specified shapes and dimensions.

Description

Lens rough grinders roughly process raw materials for optical lenses (glass or optical resin blanks) using grinding machines or rotary head grinders, roughly shaping the form, thickness, and curvature based on design drawings. Operators select and attach grinding wheels or grinding tools, adjust rotation speeds and feed rates, and perform grinding. After processing, they measure dimensions and curvature accuracy using micrometers, calipers, lens gauges, etc., and hand over to the finishing polishing process. During processing, coolant (cutting fluid) is used for cooling the grinding wheel and removing chips. Regular dressing or replacement of grinding wheels is necessary to maintain uniform grinding surfaces, and dust management and wearing safety protective gear are also important. Production sites are in corners of factories, and automation equipment or numerically controlled machines (CNC) may be introduced.

Future Outlook

Demand for skilled workers remains steady due to high-precision needs in the optical equipment market, but simple tasks decrease with advances in automation and CNC. Roles of highly skilled technicians are increasingly important in small-lot production of special lenses and prototyping.
