Classification

Summary

A profession that chemically and physically processes animal hides such as those from cows or sheep, performing tanning, dyeing, and finishing to create base materials for leather products.

Description

The Tanning Worker (Leather) is a specialist who cleans and de-hairs raw hides, removes unnecessary components through lime or enzyme treatment, then performs tanning using chemicals such as chrome or vegetable tannin. Further, through dyeing, oil and fat replenishment, drying, and finishing processes, they impart appropriate physical properties and texture to the leather. This involves managing pH and temperature for each process, measuring chemicals, operating machinery (drum machines or bed machines), and conducting quality inspections (thickness, color unevenness, flexibility, etc.) to produce leather of stable quality. Safety and health management, as well as reducing environmental impact, are also important.

Future Outlook

While general tanning workers in Japan are on a decreasing trend, demand for artisans with specialized skills in high-value leather or environmentally low-impact processes is expected to continue.
