Industry & Occupation
Classification
Summary
A profession that inspects the appearance, sewing, dimensions, and other quality aspects of leather garments to confirm compliance with standards and customer requirements.
Description
Leather garment inspectors target leather clothing such as jackets, coats, and pants manufactured in factories. They inspect for surface scratches, dirt, color unevenness, sewing fraying or dimensional errors, and the attachment status of accessories (buttons, zippers), etc. Using measuring and observation tools such as calipers, rulers, color difference meters, and loupes, they determine conformity or non-conformity against JIS standards and internal quality criteria, remove defective products from the line, and report and record inspection results on forms or PC. They may also analyze inspection results and provide improvement proposals to the manufacturing department. The work is mainly standing, involving repeated inspections in a steady rhythm as line work.
Future Outlook
Although Japan's leather goods manufacturing industry is shrinking, there is ongoing demand for inspectors with advanced quality management skills. With the adoption of automation for visual inspections, higher value-added tasks such as analyzing results and proposing improvements will become increasingly important.
