Summary

A job that involves cutting and machining metal materials using a general-purpose lathe to manufacture parts.

Description

Lathe operators use general-purpose lathe machines to rotate metal materials and perform cutting operations with tools (tool bits). Operators read drawings, select and set cutting tools and cutting conditions (spindle speed, feed rate, depth of cut, etc.), and perform machine setup and workpiece fixturing. During machining, they use measuring instruments (calipers, micrometers, etc.) to check quality, and as needed, replace tools or make fine adjustments. They also handle daily machine cleaning and simple maintenance, while thoroughly managing safety and hygiene.

Future Outlook

Demand remains stable due to a shortage of workers amid declining birthrates and aging population, but the proportion of general-purpose lathe work is decreasing due to the advancement of CNC and automation. Demand for highly skilled workers remains high.
