Ore Dryer Operator (Ironmaking, steelmaking)
こうせきかんそうこう(せいてつ、せいこう)
Industry & Occupation
Classification
Summary
This occupation involves processing raw materials such as iron ore using high-temperature drying equipment in ironmaking and steelmaking processes to reduce moisture content.
Description
Ore dryer operators feed iron ore and other manufacturing raw materials into high-temperature drying equipment such as rotary kilns or drum dryers to reduce the moisture content to the specified level. They set temperatures and air volumes for the equipment, monitor operating conditions, respond to abnormalities, manage safety, and also handle regular inspections and simple maintenance. Since the dried raw materials are used in subsequent smelting and steelmaking processes, quality control plays an important role, involving measurements with thermohygrometers and moisture meters. Shift work and night shifts are common, and they may also operate heavy machinery or transport raw materials using forklifts.
Future Outlook
While automation and labor reduction in steel mills are progressing, the importance of equipment maintenance and quality control is increasing, and the demand for skilled technicians is expected to remain stable.
