Industry & Occupation
Classification
Summary
A profession that finishes the surface of metal parts to high precision and smoothness using special abrasives and grains.
Description
Metal lapping workers apply paste mixed with abrasives (such as diamond particles or aluminum oxide particles) to a flat plate called a lapping plate, and rub the target part against it to precisely finish flatness and surface roughness. Depending on the material and use of the part, they adjust the grit size of the abrasives, pressure, and stroke, handling products that require high smoothness such as optical parts, molds, and semiconductor stages. Work includes both manual and machine operations, as well as regular measurements, machine maintenance, and management of work records.
Future Outlook
With the expanding demand for high-precision parts, stable demand is expected in the semiconductor, aerospace, and medical equipment fields.
