Kimono Tailor
わさいにん
Industry & Occupation
Classification
Summary
Traditional artisan who manually handles cutting, sewing, tailoring, and finishing of Japanese clothing (kimono).
Description
Kimono tailors take measurements for Japanese garments such as kimonos, haori jackets, and long under-kimonos (juban), create patterns, cut fabric, perform hand sewing and machine sewing, attach linings and interlinings, and beautifully tailor kimonos. While inheriting traditional techniques, they adapt to the diversification of materials and designs, and also handle kimono remodeling, alterations, and repairs. In addition to working in workshops or kimono stores, they may also start independent businesses.
Future Outlook
Although the kimono market is shrinking, steady demand is expected from the inheritance of traditional culture, high-end products, and inbound tourism needs. Skill succession and talent development are challenges amid a shortage of successors.
