Description
Hand-suki Papermakers pre-treat plant fibers such as kozo (paper mulberry) and mitsumata, pour adjusted pulp (made with hot water or chemicals) onto a su (bamboo screen), and manually drain the water to form the paper. After forming, it undergoes natural drying or drying in a washi drying area, then adjusts the suction quality and thickness, and sometimes applies dyeing, embossing, or suction-patterning. This artisan work inherits traditional techniques while pursuing paper quality and designs suited to uses, requiring manual dexterity and patience.
Future Outlook
Demand as traditional crafts is stable, but successor shortage is an issue. Due to expansion of markets in tourism and high-value-added products, demand may gradually increase.
