The Seaman is the entry-level rank (OR-1) in the Maritime Self-Defense Force, serving as ship crew and performing a wide range of basic duties including assistance in ship operations, maintenance and management of equipment and weapons, radio communications, first aid, and more. Daily activities involve strict discipline-based training on land or aboard ship, surveillance and security, rescue operation training, etc., to build the foundation as a Self-Defense Force member. While following instructions from higher ranks, cooperates as a team member and is required to respond swiftly in emergencies.
