Classification

Summary

A craftsman who processes stone material and installs it on buildings, tombstones, monuments, etc. Handles everything consistently from stone selection, cutting, shaping, polishing, decoration, to construction.

Description

Stonemasons cut and shape natural stones such as granite and marble, and install them on building exteriors, retaining walls, gateposts, monuments, tombstones, etc. Starting from appraising stones at sites or factories, they operate cutting machines and polishing machines to process to exact dimensions, and fix them with mortar or adhesives. They read blueprints, perform dimensioning (marking), and since they handle heavy objects, knowledge of cranes and slinging, as well as safety management, is required. There is a lot of outdoor work, combining manual labor and machine work, with high-precision finishing demanded.

Future Outlook

While demand for natural stone remains stable due to restoration of public facilities, landscape maintenance, and seismic retrofitting, labor shortages due to decreasing numbers of young workers pose a challenge. Trends in skill inheritance, mechanization, and labor-saving efforts will continue in the future.
