Indigo Dyeing Worker

Industry & Occupation
Classification
Summary
Japanese traditional craft artisan who hand-dyes fabrics and clothing using fermented indigo vat liquid.
Description
Indigo dyeing workers prepare fermented indigo dye liquid (tateshii) and carry out the traditional technique of repeatedly dipping fabric to develop color through oxidation. First, they adjust the dye from sukumo and pre-treat the fabric with boiling wash or mordanting. Next, they dip the fabric in the dye bath and allow it to oxidize and develop color in the air, repeating the process. They create patterns using resist techniques such as shibori dyeing or stencil dyeing, and finally perform washing, drying, and finishing processes. Temperature and pH management are important, requiring skilled intuition and years of experience.
Future Outlook
There is a serious shortage of young artisans and successor issues, with efforts advancing to preserve traditional techniques. New demand is expected from collaborations with the interior and fashion industries.
