Washi Papermaker (Handmade)
わししょうぞうこう(てすき)
Industry & Occupation
Classification
Summary
Handmade washi papermakers use plant fibers such as kozo and mitsumata as raw materials to handcraft traditional washi paper using traditional manufacturing techniques.
Description
Handmade washi papermakers steam-cook and beat plant fibers such as kozo, mitsumata, and gampi to create raw pulp, then use a sukibune (papermaking vat) and sukigeta (frame) to form paper using the nagashizuki (flowing) papermaking technique. The formed paper is pressed, sun-dried or machine-dried, then surface-finished and cut to produce the final product. High attention to detail and skilled handwork are required, and design for traditional crafts and adaptation to market needs are also important.
Future Outlook
While the shortage of workers is intensifying due to the aging population and declining birthrate, demand in niche markets is expected to be maintained and expanded due to growing interest in traditional crafts and handmade culture, as well as the expansion of tourism experiences and overseas demand.
