Classification

Summary

Fishery worker who catches fish and shellfish using handline nets and handles everything from landing to sorting.

Description

Handline net fishers use handline nets (fishing gear where nets are set on the seabed and pulled up by hand or small machinery) to catch fish and shellfish. They set out early in the morning or at night, deploy the nets at the fishing ground, wait for schools of fish to approach, and then haul in the nets manually or mechanically. The landed fish are sorted and stored on board by type and size, and then shipped to markets after returning to port. Collaboration with crew members and the ability to observe sea conditions and fish schools are required.

Future Outlook

While the aging of fishing workers and shortage of successors are challenges, stable supply of aquatic products and the importance of fishery resource management will lead to expectations for new initiatives such as efficiency technologies and regional branding.
