Classification

Summary

A technical profession that investigates and analyzes the physical and chemical properties of soil at sites and in laboratories, providing data necessary for foundation safety evaluation.

Description

Geotechnical investigators conduct on-site surveys, sampling, and various soil tests to obtain ground information essential for foundation design of roads, bridges, buildings, etc., and analyze and evaluate the results. On-site, they handle sample collection, boring operations, and in-situ tests (Standard Penetration Test, Swedish Sounding, etc.). In the laboratory, they are responsible for physical and chemical property tests such as particle size distribution test, triaxial compression test, CBR test, liquid limit and plastic limit tests. Based on the obtained data, they evaluate the ground's bearing capacity and deformation characteristics, and prepare reports. They collaborate with civil engineers and design staff to support the development of safe and economical foundation structures. Much of the work is outdoors, requiring physical stamina, attention to detail, and precise data management to adapt to weather and terrain changes.

Future Outlook

With ongoing infrastructure development and urban development, demand for geotechnical surveys will remain stable. Strengthening of environmental regulations, BCP (Business Continuity Planning), and DX implementation will require advanced analysis techniques and adaptation to digitalization.
