Classification
Summary
Technical professionals who plan, design, and analyze to prevent floods and river overflows. They use meteorological data and topographic data for simulations with numerical models and handle planning for disaster prevention facilities and river channel improvements.
Description
Flood control engineers are experts who plan and design flood control facilities such as levees, dams, and retarding basins, and perform numerical simulation analyses to mitigate river flooding and flood risks. They formulate flood inundation predictions using rainfall-runoff models and topographic/land use data from Japan and abroad, and develop disaster prevention plans and river improvement plans. Based on survey and geological investigation results, they select construction methods, evaluate costs, and conduct environmental impact assessments. They belong to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, local governments, construction consultants, research institutions, etc., and coordination and discussions with relevant organizations and local residents are important tasks. In recent years, the introduction of new technologies such as climate change countermeasures, smart flood management, and real-time monitoring with IoT sensors is progressing.
Future Outlook
Due to climate change-induced abnormal weather and increasing frequency of heavy rains, progress is being made in inspection/updating of flood control facilities and introduction of smart flood control systems. Demand is increasing for real-time monitoring using AI/IoT technology and urban flood countermeasures. Demand for engineers with specialized knowledge is expected to remain high.
