Classification

Summary

An artisan who uses brushes and paints to draw patterns and pictures on the unglazed body of ceramics, completing the decoration through firing.

Description

Ceramic painters are specialists who decorate the bisque-fired or dried clay body of ceramics after forming and drying, using diverse techniques such as blue underglaze, polychrome enamels, and overglaze painting, and complete the product through glazing and final firing. They create patterns, plan color schemes, depict fine details with brushwork, mix pigments and mediums, and manage firing temperatures and times, requiring chemical knowledge as well. There is demand across a wide range from traditional crafts to tableware and interior ceramics, requiring handwork precision and aesthetic sensibility.

Future Outlook

With the succession of traditional crafts and demand for high-quality ceramics, the value of hand-painted decoration is expected to be maintained. Expansion of tourism and interior markets as well as overseas demand is anticipated, while training successors remains a challenge.
