Classification

Summary

A job that operates general-purpose milling machines, etc., and processes metal parts to high precision using end mills.

Description

End mill machinists operate machine tools such as general-purpose milling machines and use end mills (rotary cutting tools) to machine metal parts such as steel and aluminum materials according to shape and dimensional tolerances. They read machining drawings, set cutting conditions (spindle speed, feed rate, depth of cut), and perform tool changes and edge adjustments. After machining, they measure dimensions with calipers or micrometers to confirm accuracy, and also handle tool life management, cutting fluid management, and simple machine maintenance. They are required to handle mass production and prototype small-lot multi-variety production, as well as investigate causes and implement countermeasures for machining troubles.

Future Outlook

With the progress of CNC automation, demand for manual general-purpose machining is decreasing, but skilled techniques will continue to be required for small-lot multi-variety production of high-precision parts. Acquisition of machining automation and digital technologies will become increasingly important in the future.
