Industry & Occupation

Agriculture, Forestry, Fisheries & Environment

Classification

Summary

A fishery worker who dives into the sea using breathing apparatus or oxygen tanks to collect marine products such as shellfish and seaweed.

Description

Diving fishermen wear scuba gear or wetsuits and head out to sea by boat. At depths from several meters to tens of meters, they manually collect marine products such as abalone, sea urchins, wakame, and sea squirts. They must manage breathing underwater, operate equipment, respond to currents and weather changes, and ensure safety through maritime radio and coordination with surface workers. Since freshness is critical for catches, work starts early in the morning, followed by sorting and shipping preparation at the port.

Future Outlook

While challenges include declining fishery resources and an aging workforce, demand is expected in sustainable fisheries and tourism sectors. Improvements in safety and the introduction of remote operation technology are also likely.
